Kedumba Drawing Award Artist Statement
I take a utilitarian approach to drawing, often seeing drawing as a means to an end to support my painting practice. Often heavy handed, in some cases I will discard or destroy the drawing entirely. However for my 2020 residency to Fowlers Gap NSW I decided to alter this practice. I brought large 330gsm sheets of Arches paper and completed a series of plein air drawings using mixed media. Positing the drawing as my primary practice, I responded directly to what I felt and saw in this uniquely paradoxical landscape, that is both arid and immensely rich in life, colour and form.
